“God made them just like that. And they need a deeper understanding of why women long to be fought for, to be swept up into adventure, and to be the beauty. For that is how God made them as well.
So, I offer this book, not as seven steps to being a better man, but as a safari of the heart to recover a life of freedom, passion, and adventure. I believe it will help men get their heart back- and women as well. Moreover, it will help women to understand their man and help them live the life they both want.”
John has set out to prove that God did not create men to be nice boys. He created us to live a life of passion, freedom, and adventure. To be dangerous men living in a really big story. He says, “God designed men to be powerful. Simply look at the dreams and desires written in the heart of every boy: to be a hero, a warrior, to love a beauty, to live a life of adventure. But sometimes between boyhood and the struggles of yesterday, most men lose heart. All those passions, dreams and desires get buried under deadlines, pressures, and disappointments. Christianity feels irrelevant to the recovery of their heart. No wonder most men lead lives of quiet resignation, meanwhile looking for a little life on the side.”
The author uses the following to make his points:
-Recovering their true masculine hearts
-Healing the wounds and trauma in their stories
-Delighting in the strength and wildness they were created to offer the world.
He wholeheartedly believes God created man and woman different to complete each other. Both have different purposes and when they follow their heart, God’s plan works. Men are hunters, women are gatherers and together this creates joy.
Today’s “masculinity” is under attack and many men are harboring self-defeating sadness because of the daily minutia that isn’t satisfying to the inner being desiring freedom. This finds its way to the women who aren’t fulfilled by their husbands. Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?
Eldredge uses God’s message of man’s creation being incredibly perfect, unless you do not believe in God. He also believes that today most people are afraid to call out the “man/woman” designs to placate some people’s tolerance of picking and choosing sex and gender like ordering at a drive thru. He even shows his readers how to pray for sexual healing.
This book was originally written in 2001 and then expanded in 2021. Incredible the difference just 20 years makes. I do not plan to weigh in on any of this debate, rather I will contend that once we left the city behind and moved to “the woods,” my wild heart emerged in a huge way. God’s creation is admired more and my “hunting” abilities as well as natural living has elevated to “manly,” as I see it. Here’s to boats, lakes, trails, hunting, building cabins and enjoying God’s nature!
