Happy birthday to all my United States citizen friends!I have some great information about international groups that I'dintended to write about this month, but I decided to put that asideand save it for next. Why?Well, I felt compelled to remind myself and you about the Americanorigins of the mountain dulcimer. (My hammered dulcimers friendswill have to bear with me.)This 4th of July season is a great time to remember that themountain dulcimer is a uniquely American instrument. In fact, that's one of the things I enjoy pointing out to others when theyoogle at and admire the sound of the mountain dulcimer. In America, all of the commonly played instruments are historicalimports. The history of the MD starts right here, cloudy at it maybe. Americans popularized it at a minimum, and likely invented itthough we can't site the date and time. For me, I quickly become enamored with the sound, but I've retainedan interest in the MD as a living history story. I wish the ideawould catch on, but the dulcimer is as American as baseball andapple pie. I suspect if more folks knew about its origin...by morefolks, I mean mainstream America...it would be recognized as anAmerican icon. So, the next time you can, ask that Bluegrass band what it's likeplaying all those "imports." Well, maybe not. But do be sure andlet folks know that these instruments are history inmotion...something no other instrument can boast. This sets us apart. Now don't get me wrong. The MD is ours, and engrained in ourhistory, but it doesn't have to stay there! That's why I takeequal pleasure watching folks push the MD envelope and take it innew and exciting directions. So, how about some nice patriotic songs on the MD for the holiday?Pass the corn-on-the-cob, careful with those fireworks, andsomebody call a tune...*** Some exciting news...I've been giving this a lot of thought, and I've been taking someprodding from many of you. I'm pulling together details of a saleon more "ED gear" or dulcimer stuff you can buy. We've done thisbefore and it was a positive experience. However, I'd like to makesome exciting changes that you won't want to miss out on. I won'tsay too much right now, except for this...- The products will be very high quality (more embroidery, colors, personalization)And- Because of that, the sale duration will be limited (to closeorders and get items custom-made and shipped)Oh! And...- I'll giving something cool away with each order!I'll keep you posted, but I expect to be able to reveal more in thecoming months.Contest:Congratulations to Shannon Egan for winning the June 2007 contest.Shannon won two pairs of Carriage House Creations instrumentearrings! There were 1104 entries! That doesn't mean you've missedyour chance to get your hands on these earrings. Yep, they have a special page they can loginto and pluck the festival information right out of our database. So, if you are organizing a festival, ensure your festivalinformation is correct in EverythingDulcimer.com and it will ensurethe correct information makes it into DPN. Efficient, isn't it?Marketplace ads:August 8, 2007 is the day of reckoning for Marketplace ads. As areminder, not long ago a new system of automatic removal of ads wasput into place. All ads will now disappear 90 days after it waslast entered/updated/reviewed. I grandfathered all existing ads togive time to get the word out. That grandfathering expires on8/8/07. So, I suspect a great number of ads that are currentlyrunning will go away on that day. If yours is one of them andyou'd like to keep it, be sure to log into your ad prior to August8th, review or edit and save it.That's all I have this month. Please have a safe and enjoyable 4thof July!BTW, archived newsletters can be found from here:http://www.everythingdulcimer.com/newsletter.phpBruce

As I write this, Subtropical Storm Andrea is spinning up off thecoast. We can only hope that this is not a sign of things to come. However, we welcome the rain she's bringing to this part of thecountry.Over the last year and a half or so, I've been fortunate enough toconvince some great artists to come to Jacksonville to put on smallconcerts. We had Robert Force, Neal and Coleen Walters, and lastweekend, Mary Z. and Bob Cox. These were "targets of opportunity"concerts. Robert was in town on business, the Walters were makingtheir annual Florida swing, and Mary and Bob don't live too faraway. These concerts have proved very rewarding. The official sponsor isour local dulcimer club, so great exposure for us. My venue is mychurch, so we have a great sound system and location. Members ofmy church and community sure appreciate the musical variety thatthese artists bring. The artists like the fact that theseconcerts, although small, reach far more than a house concert. So, I throw it out as a suggestion for those of you that would liketo promote their club, expose others to this great music, or justas a community service. Give some thought to reaching out andsponsoring small concert venues. It's a win for you locally, andsupports our artists/friends. Here are some suggested startersteps:- Start by arranging a venue. It doesn't have to be too big. Achurch or community center will work great- Keep the tickets cheap. If your venue is free, let all theticket money flow back to the artist- Make sure it's okay for your artist to sell CDs and otherproducts at the venue- Contact artists you know and like and see if they will be inyour area. If so, book the date. Give yourself plenty of leadtime.- Promote, promote, promote. Get creative and get the word outabout your event. This might entail flyers, newspaperannouncements, and of course personal mention. One of the bestallies in this effort are other dulcimer club members. If everyonebrings an extra person or two, you'll quickly have a great crowd.Don't forget about other musical organizations in your area such asfolk or bluegrass associations.- If the artist is comfortable with it, involve a club member ortwo as an opening act, or let the whole club play a concertprelude. It's a great motivator!- Don't try to book artists to close together. I'm finding oneartist per 6 months to be a great pace- If possible, serve light refreshments at the intermission- Be sure to list your concert in the events listings onEverythingDulcimer.com!--------------------------------Now onto the news!Marketplace AdsImportant news for anyone with an ad in the marketplace...I've heard you. The marketplace was getting a little raggedbecause many folks never deleted their ad after they sold theiritem(s). Now ads will automatically expire 90 days after they areplaced, UNLESS they return and refresh their ad. So, if you wantyour ad there permanently, you will have to return to your ad 4times per year to keep it displaying. If you don't want your ad tocontinue to appear, you can delete as usual, or just wait and it'llexpire. As of now, ads that are currently displaying have a grace periodand will not expire until August 8th.The expiration date of all ads appear in the lower right handcorner of the ad.TablatureThere is a movement afoot to further classifyEverythingDulcimer.com's tablature listings for easier searching. For instance, by tuning or even genre. Lynna Jackson is heading upthat effort. If you have suggestions about that, or you'd like tohelp, please contact Lynna at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view itIf you haven't checked out www.mountaindulcimer-1-3-5.com lately, please do! Here's the link to a great page on the currenttablature selectionhttp://www.mountaindulcimer-1-3-5.com/CurrentTablature.htm.Festival ListingsDPN and EverythingDulcimer.com are now partnering up for festivallistings. At the top of most pages, there is a new tab entitled"Festivals." This tab is for dulcimer events lasting more than aday. If you list your festival there, a magical thing will happen. It will appear within the festival listings onEverythingDulcimer.com AND it will appear in the next issue of DPN(one it's approved). Talk about convenience! What about other kinds of events? Well, we still have the eventstab for that. Events are defined as anything that is not afestival (short duration events), such as concerts, workshops (nota part of a larger festival), classes etc.I think that's about all the news that is news this month! Thanksfor all your support!Bruce
